How nitrogen form influences the speed, consistency and longevity of turf response

    The amount of nitrogen applied has a major influence on turf growth, but it does not tell the whole story.

    Different forms of nitrogen become available at different rates. Some produce a rapid response, while others release nitrogen more gradually to support consistent growth over a longer period.

    Understanding these differences helps turf managers select a fertilizer that delivers the response required from the surface.

    Readily available nitrogen

    Nitrate, ammonium and urea are commonly used sources of readily available nitrogen.

    They can produce a relatively quick turf response when temperature, moisture and growing conditions are suitable.

    Nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻)

    Nitrate is highly soluble and can be taken up quickly through the turf roots.

    However, it also moves readily with water. This makes it more vulnerable to leaching on sandy rootzones, during heavy rainfall or where excessive irrigation is applied.

    Ammoniacal nitrogen (NH₄⁺)

    Ammonium can be taken up directly by the plant or converted into nitrate by soil microorganisms.

    Because it carries a positive charge, it can be held within the rootzone more effectively than nitrate. Its conversion and availability are influenced by temperature, moisture, pH and microbial activity.

    Urea nitrogen [CO(NH₂)₂]

    Urea is a concentrated and versatile nitrogen source used in both granular and liquid fertilizers.

    It can be absorbed through the leaf or converted into ammonium after reaching the turf or soil surface.

    Where granular urea is intended for root uptake, it should normally be watered in. Leaving free urea on a dry surface can increase the risk of nitrogen being lost through ammonia volatilisation.

    Organic and organo-mineral nitrogen

    Organic nitrogen must generally be broken down by soil microorganisms before it becomes available to the turf.

    Its release is therefore strongly influenced by soil temperature, moisture, pH and biological activity. It may release slowly in cold or dry conditions and more quickly when conditions favour microbial activity.

    Organo-mineral fertilizers combine organic material with mineral nitrogen. This allows a product to provide some readily available nutrition alongside nitrogen released through biological processes.

    Gronamic fertilizers use this approach, combining mineral and organic nutrient sources within one granule.

    Slow-release nitrogen

    Slow-release nitrogen supplies the nutrient more gradually than conventional soluble forms.

    Methylene urea is one of the main slow-release technologies used in professional turf fertilizers. It contains nitrogen fractions with different chain lengths, allowing some to become available relatively quickly while others release more slowly.

    This phased availability can help:

    • Extend the turf response.
    • Reduce sudden growth peaks.
    • Support more consistent growth.
    • Reduce the need for frequent applications.

    Methylene urea is used within all Sierraform GT and selected Greenmaster Pro-Lite fertilizers.

    Controlled-release nitrogen

    Controlled release fertilizers use a coating around the granule to regulate nutrient delivery.

    Moisture passes through the coating, dissolves the nutrients and allows them to be released gradually.

    The release pattern is primarily influenced by temperature and the properties of the coating.

    Controlled release nitrogen can provide:

    • Predictable feeding over a defined period.
    • Consistent growth and color.
    • Fewer applications.
    • Reduced exposure to nutrient losses.
    • Reliable nutrition on sandy rootzones and during establishment.

    Why combine different nitrogen forms?

    Nitrogen forms should not always be viewed as separate alternatives.

    The most effective fertilizers often combine different forms to create a phased turf response.

    A readily available source can begin feeding the turf soon after application, while slow-release or controlled-release nitrogen sustains the response over a longer period.

    This is why two products with a similar total nitrogen analysis can produce different results.

    The final choice should also consider the turf species, surface type, temperature, moisture, irrigation availability and amount of growth required.

    Nitrogen rate remains important, but kilograms of nitrogen alone do not determine performance.

    Selecting the right nitrogen form and release pattern allows the fertilizer to deliver the response the surface actually needs.
