Understanding ICL Mowing Height Icons
A simple guide to what the mowing height icons on ICL granular fertilizers mean and how they can help you choose the right product for your turf.
On this page:
When choosing an ICL granular fertilizer, you may see a mowing height icon showing <6 mm, >6 mm and >12 mm.
The highlighted section or sections show the mowing heights the product is recommended for.
The principle is simple: the shorter the turf, the finer the fertilizer granule needs to be.
What do the mowing height icons mean?
The three mowing height categories are:
- <6 mm: closely mown turf
- >6 mm: turf maintained above 6 mm
- >12 mm: turf maintained above 12 mm
A product may have one or more sections highlighted. For example, if >6 mm and >12 mm are highlighted, the product is suitable for turf maintained above 6 mm.
<6 mm: closely mown turf

When the <6 mm section is highlighted, the product has a fine granule suitable for closely mown turf.
- Granule size: approximately 0.5–1.7 mm
- Typical use: golf greens and other closely mown turf
- Product examples: Greenmaster Pro-Lite, Sierraform GT and selected Gronamic products
- Key point: the fine granule is suitable for turf maintained below 6 mm
Fine granules distribute evenly and settle into closely mown turf, helping maintain a smooth, consistent playing surface.

Closely mown turf requires a fine fertilizer granule suited to the short, dense turf canopy.
>6 mm: sports pitches, fairways and other quality turf

When the >6 mm and >12 mm sections are highlighted, the product is suitable for turf maintained above 6 mm.
- Granule size: approximately 1–2.5 mm
- Typical use: sports pitches, golf fairways, tees and other quality turf
- Product examples: ProTurf, Sierrablen Plus and other mini-granular products
- Key point: the product is suitable for turf above 6 mm, including turf maintained above 12 mm
These mini-granules are larger than those used on closely mown turf and are not generally recommended for golf greens maintained below 6 mm.
>12 mm: longer turf

When only the >12 mm section is highlighted, the product is intended for longer turf maintained above 12 mm.
- Granule size: approximately 2–4.5 mm
- Typical use: longer turf and less intensively managed areas
- Product examples: standard granular fertilizer products
- Key point: the larger granule is intended for turf maintained above 12 mm
For shorter turf, a finer granular product is more suitable.
Why does mowing height matter?
Granule size needs to suit the height and density of the turf canopy.
Fine granules distribute and settle more effectively in closely mown turf, while larger granules are suitable as mowing height increases.
The mowing height icons provide a quick way to identify which ICL granular products are designed for each situation.
