SMX^® is ICL’s concentrated seaweed extract derived from Ascophyllum nodosum and produced using an alkaline extraction process.

Seaweed has a long history of use in professional turf management, but research shows that the way it is extracted can influence how turf responds. In comparative work using the same Ascophyllum nodosum raw material, alkaline extraction produced significantly greater perennial ryegrass root length and root volume than the other extraction methods tested.

SMX supports root development and plant vigor while influencing plant processes involved in water regulation and stress response. Trials have demonstrated increased root length and root mass, together with improved turf quality under drought conditions.

SMX is incorporated into selected ICL turf products for use as part of professional turf nutrition and stress management programs.
