ICL Country Manager Mateo Martinez shares how technology and innovation are reshaping sustainable agriculture. From smart fertilization tools like Polysulphate® to water-efficient solutions such as H2Flo®, Mateo helps farmers face climate challenges while improving yields and resource use. His work reflects ICL’s mission to drive responsible, efficient farming that secures both productivity and environmental balance.
What significant changes are you seeing in the agricultural sector?
Nowadays, farmers are more aware of new technologies and are more willing to evaluate them in their fields. Based on their technical and economic feasibility, they decide whether to adopt them in their production units. Farmers seek more efficient technologies that promote the responsible use of water, fertilizers, and other inputs; however, they are keen observers and expect such technologies to yield a return on investment. ICL Growing Solutions technologies have been successfully adapted in many agricultural fields, as their application has proven to be both profitable for producers and sustainable for the environment.
How do you help farmers deal with climate challenges?
Through sustainable new technologies, ICL Growing Solutions team is helping to address and mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Technologies such as Polysulphate significantly reduce the carbon footprint of fertilizer applications, as it is a mineral with the lowest carbon footprint. Incorporating it into fertilization programs provides multiple benefits, including improved nitrogen use efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, and increased crop yields. Additionally, technologies as H2Flo, which enhance water use efficiency, have gained importance, as fields where it has been applied have shown better water management while simultaneously improving crop performance.
Which research or technological innovation do you think will significantly impact farmers?
The implementation of technologies that maximize the use of resources such as water and nutrients has the potential to revolutionize agriculture. However, their successful application will depend on their technical and economic feasibility, as it is essential for farmers to have access to these technologies.
