Webinar: Fertigation management under saline-sodium conditions

Speaker:

Webinar objective:
Equip participants with practical tools and technical guidance to diagnose and manage salinity and sodicity in fertigation systems. The webinar will explore ways to improve water and nutrient availability, maintain soil structure, and support crop productivity.
Topics covered:
- Salinity and sodicity: key concepts and effects on crops
- How to assess and interpret water and soil quality
- Irrigation, leaching, and salt management strategies
- Nutrient management and water conditioning
- Technologies that improve fertigation efficiency
- Live Q&A
How do salinity and sodicity affect crops?
Salinity and sodicity are two of the main challenges to efficient fertigation management. Although both problems can occur simultaneously, their effects on soil and crops differ.
Salinity increases the concentration of salts in the soil solution and raises its osmotic pressure, making it harder for roots to absorb water, even when sufficient moisture is available.
A high concentration of exchangeable sodium, on the other hand, can disperse clay particles and degrade soil structure. As a result, infiltration and hydraulic conductivity decrease, surface crusting becomes more likely, and aeration in the root zone is reduced. Under these conditions, water and fertilizers may be distributed unevenly, limiting fertigation efficiency.
