“Our pitch sees a high number of fixtures, with wear building up quickly in goalmouths, central areas and shaded parts of the pitch,” says Tom Wells, Head Groundsman at Morecambe FC. “Heavy rainfall on a challenging construction can also make recovery difficult.”

    Establishment Speed and Early Coverage

ProSelect 1 Premium Pitch, a perennial ryegrass mixture developed for high-wear sports pitches, was used as part of the 2025/26 renovation and overseeding programme.

“We saw quick and consistent germination, with emergence inside six days, even in weaker areas such as goalmouths and shaded parts of the pitch,” says Tom.

“The pitch was ready for play within six weeks, which was critical given the schedule.”

    Performance Under High Usage

“With the level of use and limited recovery time, maintaining coverage is always a challenge,” he explains.

“It’s held its grass cover well, particularly in high-wear areas, which has helped us keep the surface more consistent through the season.”

    Recovery Without Additional Lighting

“The biggest benefit has been recovery. After periods of heavy wear, the grass has consistently come back well, even without the use of additional lighting,” says Tom.
