Boulby Mine is the UK's deepest mining operation and the worlds first and only producer of the multi-nutrient fertiliser Polysulphate.
ICL Boulby Mine is an underground mining operation and processing facility located along the North Yorkshire coastline. We are the world’s first and only producer of the multi-nutrient, low-carbon fertiliser, Polysulphate.
The 260-million-year-old raw mineral deposited by an ancient sea called the Zechstein Sea, polyhalite, is extracted from 1,300 meters beneath the Earth’s surface and distributed worldwide from our Teesdock Terminal.
Since the discovery of polyhalite in 1999, we have been committed to expanding the Polysulphate market through continuous research into its potential. Polysulphate and Rock Salt is mined, refined and distributed through our deep sea terminal at Teesdock.
ICL Boulby is proud to be the largest employer in East Cleveland, committed to supporting our workforce and playing a vital role in the local and regional economy. We actively contribute to the community through financial donations and volunteer efforts with local groups.

Three distinct grades of Polysulphate are produced at Boulby: Polysulphate Standard, Polysulphate Granular, and Polysulphate Mini. In addition, ICL Boulby also produces ICL PotashpluS, a granular product that consists of an equal blend of Polysulphate and ICL Potash. All these products are transported by direct rail link to Teesport, where they are shipped to growers worldwide.

From 1.3 km below the North Sea, off the northeast coast of the UK, ICL mines and extracts Polysulphate for processing and global distribution. The minimal processing results in a very low carbon footprint fertiliser.

ICL Boulby is a technologically advanced mine. Located within a national park means the mine must meet stringent environmental conditions, holding multiple internationally recognized certifications, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 50001.

The mine at ICL Boulby is the deepest in the UK and the second deepest in Europe, mining Polysulphate from the ancient dried-up Zechstein Sea at around 1,300 meters below the North Sea and 8 km off the UK coast.

ICL Boulby also houses the Boulby Underground Laboratory, a multi-disciplinary deep underground science facility operated by the UK’s Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and working in partnership with ICL UK.

A series of significant efficiency improvements at the mine has recently reduced the already low carbon footprint of Polysulphate by more than 90%. With a carbon footprint of just 0.0029 kg CO2e per kg of product, Polysulphate stands out as a prime eco-friendly choice for farmers.

The direct rail link from the mine to ICL’s deep-water berth at Teesport ensures excellent connectivity. Polysulphate can be loaded and shipped to our customers around the world so they can benefit from ICL’s Polysulphate fertiliser.
