For fruit growers, the challenge is balancing long-term tree health and vigor with the productivity and fruit quality needed from this year’s crop. Across years of working with tree fruit growers, I’ve seen that the most marketable fruit often comes from a coordinated nutrition strategy—one that supports fruit set and retention early, then shifts with crop demand to build the size, Brix and firmness needed to meet market expectations and improve returns.
The key is timing. Targeting nutrition at key stages from bud and bloom through fruit development and harvest can help support yield, fruit quality and profitability.
Why Nutrient Timing Matters – A Season-Long Framework for Orchard Nutrition
Fruit yield and quality can be limited when trees don’t have access to the nutrients they need during critical periods of growth. Nutritional priorities are critical for fruit sizing, firmness, sweetness, or storage life later on, but they also shift throughout the season. What supports bloom and fruit set isn’t necessarily what the crop needs during fruit sizing, finishing and harvest. The goal is to align nutrient availability with what the tree and developing fruit need at each stage.
Agronomist Tip: Don’t overlook water quality
Water pH and irrigation water quality can influence nutrient availability and fertigation performance. Step 1. Early Season: Build the Foundation
Objective: Establish healthy early growth and prepare the tree for bloom and fruit set.

Nutritional focus: Phosphorus and potassium, supported by molybdenum, cobalt, sulfur, magnesium, and zinc. These nutrients play important roles in flower formation and retention, chlorophyll production, plus nitrogen-use efficiency during this critical period of crop development.

Nutritional focus: Potassium becomes a key focus as fruit develops and sizing progresses.

Step 4. Post-Harvest: Replenish and Prepare for Next Season
Objective: Replenish nutrients after harvest and support the foundation for next year’s crop.
Nutritional focus: Potassium, sulfur, magnesium, and calcium to replenish nutrients and support the tree through the post-harvest period and into the next growing season.

In practice, a systems approach means making each application purposeful, aligning nutrition with key growth stages to help address crop needs before they become problems.
