With N, Ca, and Mg for new substrates

The shift to new growing media is a fact, no more a trend. Peat-free and peat-reduced substrates require specific fertilizer solutions. New growing media such those containing woodfiber, bark or coir,  have lower buffering capacity for both water and nutrients, require higher N fixation and are more susceptible to pH fluctuations. For this reason it is important to adjust the supply of nutrients and irrigation through the growing season. In many countries PSM (potting soil manufacturer) deliver growing media ready-to-use because they have adjusted the nutritional inputs. In some regions though, growers create their own mix.

In both cases the most important thing is to know how new substrates interact with nutrient elements.

Cal-BOOST has been specifically developed in case of nitrogen draw down and/or extra calcium or magnesium is needed.

Mastering fertilization in the shift to peat-free growing

Q&A

No, in peat-reduced or peat-free substrates you can continue with your standard Osmocote dose rates and add Cal-BOOST. Cal-BOOST will replace other nitrogen compensation products, like a slow release (SRF) N.

Yes, you can use Cal-BOOST in indoor crops, but lower the dose rate to 0,5kg/m3 in susceptible crops or hot climate conditions.

The calcium comes available over a period of 2-3 months. The effect will even be longer because of the buffer effect of the substrate.

No, Cal-BOOST has no trace elements, you can use Micromax Premium for supply of trace elements.

The recommendation is to lower the dose rate of starter fertilizer to max 0,5kg/m3 . NPK in Cal-BOOST is available from the start and also Ca and Mg benefit the plant growth from the beginning. Product contains no trace elements, so consider the increase of dose rate of Micromax Premium if you lower the dose rate of starter fertilizer.

The nitrogen is coated Urea with a longevity of 2-3 months and a low % of ammonium nitrate.
