SMX® Technology

SMX^® is ICL’s concentrated seaweed extract derived from Ascophyllum nodosum, sourced from Acadian Seaplants and produced using an alkaline extraction process. It is incorporated into selected ICL turf products to support root development, plant vigour and turf resilience under environmental stress.

Seaweed extracts are widely used in professional turf management, but the way seaweed is processed can influence how plants respond. In comparative studies using the same Ascophyllum nodosum raw material, alkaline extraction produced greater perennial ryegrass root length and root volume than the other extraction methods evaluated.

Further trial work has shown increased root development and improved turf quality under drought conditions. For turf managers, this means SMX can help support a stronger root system and more effective plant response when water availability or other growing conditions become limiting.
