Why different iron formulations behave differently in turf management.

    If you’ve used different iron products, you’ve probably noticed they don’t all behave the same way.

    Some produce a rapid color response. Others remain effective for longer. Some are better suited to high-pH soils, while others are primarily used to improve turf presentation.

    The difference isn’t the iron itself. It’s the formulation.

    Understanding how different formulations behave helps explain why one product may be the right choice in one situation but not another.

    Why isn’t all iron available to the plant?

    Iron is abundant in most soils, but plants can only absorb it when it is present in a soluble form.

    Once iron is exposed to oxygen it naturally begins to change into an insoluble form that roots cannot absorb. As soil pH increases, this happens even more readily, leaving less iron available for plant uptake.

    This is why turf growing on alkaline soils can develop iron deficiency despite the soil containing significant reserves of iron.

    Understanding this behaviour explains why different iron formulations have been developed.

    What is iron sulphate?

    Iron sulphate is the most widely used source of iron in turf management.

    It is popular because it is economical, easy to apply and produces a rapid visual response.

    However, iron sulphate changes quickly after application.

    Once exposed to oxygen it rapidly becomes insoluble. Under normal conditions this can happen within around an hour, and even faster on high-pH soils.

    For this reason, iron sulphate is generally selected where the objective is immediate turf colour and presentation rather than maintaining iron availability within the soil.

    What is chelated iron?

    Chelated (pronounced key-lated) iron works differently.

    A chelating agent surrounds the iron ion, helping protect it from becoming insoluble as quickly.

    This helps keep iron in a soluble, plant-available form for longer than iron sulphate alone.

    Not all chelating agents perform equally well across every soil pH. Some remain stable over a wider pH range than others, which is why selecting the right chelated formulation becomes increasingly important on alkaline soils.

    Chelated iron products were originally developed to help crops growing in high-pH conditions where conventional iron sources quickly become unavailable.

    Why do some products contain both?

    Some iron products combine iron sulphate with chelated iron rather than relying on a single formulation.

    This allows the formulation to provide the rapid visual response associated with iron sulphate while also helping maintain iron availability for longer through the chelated fraction.
