Key Conclusions

California 2023 nectarine trial saw improved yield, quality and improved profitability. Nectarine fruit quality, size of fruit (smaller ring size number is a bigger desirable fruit) and firmness increased with foliar Nova PULSE™ and Agrolution pHLow® fertigation.

  • Enhanced Fruit Quality: Increased brix levels result in sweeter, more flavorful nectarines that satisfy consumer preferences.
  • Larger Fruit Size: Larger, more desirable fruit with smaller ring sizes, fetches higher market prices and boosts profitability.
  • Improved Firmness: Firmer nectarines lead to longer shelf life, reduced handling damage, and better marketability.
  • Proven Results: Agrolution pHLow + Nova PULSE outperforms GSP (SOP) and Control (none) treatments in all key quality metrics.

Objective

To investigate the effects of Agrolution pHLow® fertigation, plus Nova PULSETM foliar at fruit set on the yield and quality of stone fruit in California. Measurements included yield and quality (size, firmness, brix, splitting).

Treatments

An established nectarine orchard of Summer Flare 27 was used for this randomized complete block design trial. There were seven treatments with four replications, in 42’ x 18’ plots, with 20 nectarines per plot evaluated. Hail hit nectarines at fruit set.

Timing & Rates

Agrolution pHLow High K 15-6-27-3.3Ca +B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn applied twice from green up until first bloom at 25 lbs./acre (A) on 2-26-2023 and 3-4-2023 (50 lbs total). Agrolution pHLow 6-31-31-2.5S+B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn applied at 20 lbs./A by fertigation weekly initiated at bloom, a total of six times (120 lbs./A total). Nova PULSE 6-4-1-1.3S+Co .5%, Mo 10%, Zn 6%(foliar) was applied at fruit set (3-10-2023).

  • Control – None
  • Grower Standard Practice (GSP), SOP 0-0-50 (100 lbs/A), applied on 2-26-2023
  • Nova PULSE (8 oz/A) foliar at fruit set
  • Nova PULSE (16 oz/A) foliar at fruit set
  • Agrolution pHLow 6-31-31 fertigation (20 x6 lbs/A) and Nova PULSE (8 oz/A) foliar at fruit set
  • Agrolution pHLow 15-6-27-3.3Ca fertigation (25 x2 lbs/A), and Agrolution pHLow 6-31-31 fertigation (20 x6 lbs/A)
  • Agrolution pHLow 15-6-27-3.3Ca fertigation (25 x2 lbs/A), Agrolution pHLow 6-31-31 fertigation (20 x6 lbs/A), plus Nova PULSE (8 oz/A) foliar at fruit set

Soil Type: Calgro Sandy Loam (pH 7.1, CEC 8.9, OM 0.8%)

Results

Nectarine Quality Trial 2023

Agrolution pHLow (fertigation) + Nova PULSE (foliar) increased fruit quality, size of fruit (smaller ring size is bigger, more desirable fruit) and firmness compared to GSP (SOP) and Control (none).

  • Increased fruit size with Agrolution pHLow fertigated nutrition.
  • Increased brix by 12.2% and increased firmness by 12.9% with Nova PULSE foliar 16 oz/A alone over GSP and cut the damaged fruit in half for positive farm economics
  • Combining Agrolution pHLow fertigation with Nova PULSE at 8 oz/A showed positive effects with larger nectarines, more brix, better firmness (reducing fruit damage and picking labor costs) and less damaged fruit.
  • Utilizing 16 oz/A Nova PULSE with the Agrolution pHLow fertigation would be recommended for future applications based on beneficial fruit quality results obtained.

Agronomist Insight – micronutrients at work

  • Setting the baseline with Agrolution pHLow fertigation + foliar Nova PULSE at fruit set jumps to the next level of nutrition in orchards
  • Benefits observed include, bigger, firmer, sweeter fruit and less damaged nectarines for increased profitability potential.
  • If orchards have increased micronutrient availability at fruit set, it can impact cell division and potential for increased fruit weight, which can translate to increased yield per acre.
