yield increase VS control
Foliar applied Nova Pulse™ and Nova Finish™ improve soybean yields for significant ROI

yield increase VS control

Key Conclusions

  • Foliar application of Nova PULSE and Nova FINISH resulted in yield responses averaging 7.7 bushels/A, with significant grower return on investment
  • Foliar application of nutrition, including both macronutrients and micronutrients, is an important tool for increasing soybean yields.
  • There is flexibility in timing of foliar nutrients, but yield responses may be greater when foliar applications coincide with the transition from vegetative to reproductive growth at R1-R2.
  • The transition from vegetative to reproductive growth is a common and optimal time to consider crop protection applications like fungicide and insecticide, further optimizing the economics of making a foliar application pass to include nutrient products like Nova PULSE and Nova FINISH.
  • The highest yielding treatments, either the sequential application of Nova PULSE or the application combining both Nova PULSE and Nova FINISH, are estimated to have similar cost per acre to a soybean grower.

Objective

To evaluate the effect of single and sequential applications of Nova PULSE™, a water-soluble foliar fertilizer designed to improve soybean N fixation and yield. Additionally, Nova FINISH™, a water-soluble NPK fertilizer with a full complement of micronutrients was applied alone and in combination with Nova PULSE at the flowering stages of soybean to demonstrate another foliar nutrition option for late-season nutritional management of soybean.

Treatments

  • The early vegetative stage (V4-V6) application of Nova PULSE (0-6-4-1Mg-1.3S-0.5Co-10Mo-6Zn) occurred on 02 July 2023.
  • The flowering stage (R1-R2) applications of Nova PULSE and Nova FINISH (8-12-40-2.5S-0.03B-0.05Cu-0.1Mn-0.02Mo-0.1Zn) occurred on 20 July 2023.
  • Nova PULSE was applied at a rate of 6 ounces/A at each application, and Nova FINISH was applied at 2 lb/A. Applications occurred in a water volume of 20 gallons/A.
  • Each treatment was replicated four times.
  • Soil type: Milford silty clay loam (pH 7.1, 4.8% organic matter, CEC 26.1, 49 ppm P, and 144 ppm K)

Results

  • Compared to the untreated control, which received no foliar nutrition, all treatments numerically increased yield.
  • The yield response to Nova PULSE was greater when applied at the R1-R2 stages. A sequential application of Nova PULSE at V4-V6 followed by a second application at R1-R2 resulted in a larger yield response (7.1 bushels/A) relative to the control.
  • The treatment with the V4-V6 application of Nova PULSE followed by a R1-R2 application of Nova FINISH resulted in the highest overall yield (80.7 bushels/A), or a response of 8.3 bushels/A, compared to the control.
