Yield Increase

Key Conclusions

In these results, Polysulphate increased the yield of oilseed rape by up to 33%, ranging between 200 kg/ha (178 lbs/acre) for T3 and 1.15 t/ha (1026 lbs/acre) for T2.

Objective

In this trial we look at autumn and spring applications of sulfur to Winter Oilseed Rape (WOSR, Brassica napus), primarily looking at yield with different timings of sulfur. We investigate split applications of S, how this can help with establishment of the crop, and winter hardiness.

Treatments

We looked at 3 different rates of Polysulphate application onto winter oilseed rape (WOSR). The whole field had a base fertilizer of 250 kg/ha (223 lbs/acre) of 0-20-30. T1, T3 and T4 (grower standard practice) received 38 kg/ha (34 lbs/acre) of S in a single application. T2 received two applications of sulfate to the equivalent of 77 kg/ha (69 lbs/acre) of S, split 38 kg/ha (34 lbs/acre) at planting and 38 kg/ha (34 lbs/acre) early spring. All areas received 30 kg/ha of nitrogen at planting.

Results

The application of Polysulphate increased the yield in all cases. A combination of autumn and spring applications increased the yield by an extra 1.15 t/ha (approximately 1026 lbs/acre) over the grower standard practice (T4).

Polysulphate applied at 100 kg/ha resulted in an increase in oilseed rape yield of approximately 8%.
