Agriculture is at the heart of food security…

but it faces significant challenges, especially in balancing productivity with the efficient use of natural resources. Today, more than ever, farmers are under increasing pressure to grow more with less while adopting sustainable practices under extreme weather and economic circumstances.

While we understand that food security isn’t about a single solution or product, we recognize our responsibility as fertilizer manufacturers to invest in solutions and bring products to market that can help growers efficiently, cost-effectively, and sustainably improve yields long term. It’s about taking a holistic approach—one that embraces both innovation and traditional and regenerative methods that have stood the test of time.

Fertilizer Innovation as a Tool for Food Security

At ICL, we are dedicated to supporting farmers and enhancing global food security. Our fertilizer production contributes significantly to agricultural output, equivalent to approximately 70 million tons annually, translating to around 190 billion meals that help meet the caloric needs of millions.

While innovative fertilizers play a critical role, we also recognize the importance of integrating traditional and regenerative practices. These methods, such as crop rotation and cover cropping, enhance soil health and biodiversity. They help farmers maintain resilience against environmental stresses while improving productivity.

  • Innovative Processes: Precision agriculture techniques, like advanced irrigation systems, allow for efficient use of soil and water, minimizing waste while maximizing crop quality and yields.
  • Innovative Products: From foliar fertilization technologies to controlled-release fertilizers and biostimulants, these advancements help maintain high crop quality and productivity. When combined, using a systems approach to crop nutrition, we can minimize inputs and maximize results.
  • Nutrient Use Efficiency: Using gradual or controlled-release fertilizers, and developing effective fertilization plans to minimize nutrient loss, improve NUE, and support optimal plant health. Coupling these plans with regenerative practices creates a more balanced approach to soil management.

Collaboration for Global Food Security

Food security is a collective effort. From growers to governments, the food supply chain needs collaboration to ensure that the nutritious food we produce reaches everyone. ICL’s sustainable practices, like using solar power in production and extending food shelf life through advanced phosphate products, help reduce food waste and create more resilient food systems.

We are proud to say our fertilizers and phosphate production combined contribute to over 420 billion meals annually, all while embracing practices that nourish people and the planet. We aim to make a tangible difference in global food security by leveraging natural resources and innovative processes.

Moving Forward Together

On World Food Day, we thank all the folks across our industry, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting farmers and driving sustainable agriculture. Together, through innovation and collaboration, we can address the challenges of feeding a growing global population while ensuring a better future for future generations.
