At ICL, the commitment to agriculture extends beyond simply selling fertilizers; it involves building connections and enhancing understanding within the industry. Recently, I led a group of passionate fertilizer dealers from the USA to Boulby Mine in the UK. This experience was not just a tour; it was an opportunity to witness firsthand the origins of our flagship product, Polysulphate, and to connect with the dedicated individuals involved in its journey from mine to field.

US team visits ICL’s Boulby Mine, UK to learn about Polysulphate production.

A Connection to Our Roots

On June 26th, the ICL UK Sales hosted our group for the third visit in just 12 months. These visits are not only an opportunity to gain deeper insights into Polysulphate; they also provide a chance to bridge the gap between those who produce our product and those who use it. For those who have never been in a mine, witnessing the scale of production and the various stages—ranging from mining and quality control to shipping—can be an inspiring experience. Understanding the intricate processes and the dedicated people involved in bringing each ton to market enhances all of our appreciation for the product. Glen Collins from the ICLs UK team started us off with an informative presentation on Quality Control that provided context for exploring the mine. Following this, Richard Ward from ICL UK Sales led discussions on market trends and the role of Polysulphate in future agricultural practices.

Walking through the mine and witnessing the effort that goes into extracting and processing Polysulphate left a lasting impression. Conversations with miners highlighted the hard work required to deliver each ton to customers.

The Value of Hands-On Learning

The second day included a tour of one of ICL’s advocate farms, led by Agronomist Scott Garnett, who provided practical insights into the application of Polysulphate in agriculture. Feedback from customers was overwhelmingly positive. One of our technical sales managers, Chris McClain, emphasized the importance of these hands-on experiences:

“I value ICL’s commitment to hands-on training, which helps both employees and customers understand the processes, procedures, and efforts involved in bringing each ton of Polysulphate to market. I joined ICL seeking a fresh perspective, and I haven’t been disappointed. I recognize the challenges we face in the agricultural community, and I’m eager to contribute to the solutions.”

Insights and Innovations

Throughout the visit, we all gained insights into the benefits of Polysulphate and its significance in agriculture. One customer shared an experience about using Polysulphate to enhance forage quality, noting that their cattle preferred grazing on the treated side of the pasture. Another dealer remarked on the visible improvements in soil structure and plant health after applying Polysulphate to his lawn.

These stories illustrate the tangible impact of ICL’s products and the connections between growers, researchers, and mining teams.

Building a Stronger Community

For me, as the Polysulphate product manager, each trip to the mines reinforces the continued need for collaboration and innovation to address the challenges faced by our growers. The insights gained from these kinds of experiences are crucial for enhancing product offerings and better serving our customers.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in making this visit a success. Their enthusiasm and dedication are what drive our achievements. Together, we’re not just making or selling a product; we’re fostering a supportive agricultural community. These stories exemplify the real-world impact of our products and the connections we create between growers, researchers, and our dedicated mining teams.
