What is Greater Plantain (Plantago major)?

Also known as broad-leaf plantain, this common turf weed thrives in heavily used areas where the soil has become compacted.

How to Identify Greater Plantain?

Greater plantain features large, ovate to rounded leaves with prominent veins on the underside, forming a flat rosette that can easily tolerate close mowing. Flower spikes are topped by a dense, green cone of small flowers, which turn brown as seeds are produced, typically seen between May and September.

How Does Greater Plantain Grow?

This weed has a shallow but fibrous root system and can withstand regular disturbance from trampling or mowing. It spreads by seed. Greater plantain thrives in neglected grass and high-use areas where sward health is poor and the soil is compacted due to a lack of aeration.

How to Control Greater Plantain in Cultural Lawns?

To give your turf the best chance of out-competing this weed, focus on maintaining healthy, aerated soil free of compaction:

  • Regular Mowing: Maintain a sensible cutting height.
  • Fertilizer Program: Support healthy growth and strong root development.
  • Watering: Water only when necessary.
  • Drainage: Maintain good drainage and encourage organic matter breakdown with regular aeration and top dressing.
  • Raking/Scarifying: Remove moss and promote upright growth.

Additional tips:

  • Hand Removal: Small plantain plants can be removed by hand using a knife, but ensure all plant material is removed to prevent regeneration.
  • Soil Aeration: Aerate the soil regularly and to different depths to prevent compaction, especially in heavily used areas like pathways. Additional decompaction treatments may be needed.
  • Pre-Mowing Preparation: Raking or brushing before mowing helps lift flower spikes for removal.

Chemical Control Solutions for Greater Plantain

Most selective weedkillers effectively control greater plantain. Spot treat individual weeds or use a blanket treatment for widespread infestations. Apply selective herbicides when both the weed and grass are growing strongly, typically between April and October.
