Polysulphate Winter Wheat Trial in the UK
5.4

Key Conclusions
This trial showed that Polysulphate fertilizer improved the overall winter wheat yield by 5.4%, or 354 kg/ha.
At the time of the trial, the farmer reported that the average price for grain was £170/t. This means that Polysulphate fertilizer improved the return for the farm by £60.18/ha. When the cost of Polysulphate fertilizer is removed (100 kg/ha), the return on investment for this trial was £44.18/ha.
Objective
This UK winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) trial investigated the effect of an autumn application of Polysulphate fertilizer on winter wheat. Specifically, the trial examined the increase yield through crop establishment.
With UK soils being low, or critical, for sulfur deposits and plants needing S to take up nitrogen, this experiment is designed to test whether Polysulphate improves residual N uptake by the plant, and improves establishment of the crop.

Treatments
The field was split into two plots. Both the control, and the Polysulphate plot received base fertilizer (0-20-30) applied at 250 kg/ha. The trial treatment plot also received 100 kg/ha of Polysulphate.
Treatment | Field size | Base fertilizer 0-20-30 | Polysulphate |
---|---|---|---|
ha | kg/ha | kg/ha | |
Polysulphate (Field A) | 1.92 | 250 | 100 |
Control (Field B) | 1.92 | 250 | - |

Results
When compared to the control plot, the area which received Polysulphate showed an increase in yield of 354 kg/ha, a 5.4% yield increase.
